Thousands of turtles of 3 different species arrive every year to Cañas to lay their eggs in this picturesque and beautiful island of 14 kilometers long and 1,200 hectares of mangrove of diverse species (red, white, mariangolo, button piñuelo, salty and black). It is considered an important habitat for a diversity of birds and marine species.
Due to the importance of its ecosystem, a few years ago the Isla Cañas National Park was created, which also houses two archaeological sites more than 1,600 years old.
The Cañas Island Park has a well-structured organization and trained guides to assist visitors, accompanying them on various tours within the island. The list of activities is varied: observation and identification of mangrove swamps, responsible fishing, turtle watching, wagon rides, local gastronomy, kayaking, boat tours of the coasts or simply walking on the beaches and living a transforming experience.
